However, when he approached the bomber, he noticed its desperate condition and could see the wounded men inside. Instead of firing, Stigler recalled the words of his former commander, who had told him that shooting down a defenseless enemy would be dishonorable. Stigler decided not to attack the bomber. Instead, he flew alongside it, saluted the American crew, and escorted them.
To safety, away from German anti-aircraft fire, until they reached the North Sea. Then he peeled off and returned to his base. This act of mercy saved the lives of the American crew. Both Brown and Stigler survived the war, but it wasn’t until decades later that they finally met. In the late 1980s, Brown sought to find the German pilot who had spared his life, and after a long search, the two men met and became close friends.
