It's a bit odd to start with, but it allows you to pluck the string, before reverting back to the pick for the big strums. It's also essential to achieve the bright snappy tone. It's such a joyous song to play, and that staccato motif is just bursting with cheeky energy. It remains one of my favourite Van Halen songs, because it's just a great adventure in composition. Eddie performed Little Guitars on a tiny Les Paul that David Petschulat built and surprised him with on tour in Nashville. They took it to the venue and ran it through his gig, buying it on the spot for $1,100 before commissioning Pestchulat to build another. I'm playing this on an Epiphone Power Players Les Paul that I striped with vinyl.
